SEVEN STEPS TO GRADUATE SUCCESS

It is well recognised that SMEs can be reluctant to take on Graduates, as they don’t believe that they will stay for the duration. They feel that they will spend time and money in training them for someone else to ultimately benefit. So, it’s important that the graduate can hit the ground running and be seen to be adding value. Equally, if an employee feels that their career is moving quickly and they are motivated they will be more likely to want to stay.
The fourth of the ‘Seven Steps to Graduate Success’, ‘Integrating’, includes F100. This takes the graduate through the first 100 days in their job. It helps preclude the silly mistakes that graduates often make in adapting from university to working life. Part of the integration process is developing the graduates emotional intelligence and abilities to work alongside and manage people.
One of our clients has recently identified that they are aiming for 50% of their managers to come via their graduate programme. They have recognised that it is far more cost effective to build their own senior management team from within through succession planning rather than paying steep headhunting fees for their star performers. There is the added advantage that ‘home-grown talent’ will really understand their business.
