Biopac Introduces 'Bulrush' Sustainable Packaging

Leading environmental packaging supplier, Biopac, has become the only European distributor of bulrush packaging. It is organic, 100% biodegradable and set to revolutionise customer and retail product packaging.

This biodegradable packaging is made from Bulrush, a common perennial plant which lives throughout urban and rural areas near free water sources such as rivers, streams, lakes and bogs. Bulrush is dependent upon wet soil for healthy growth and maintenance, but can also be found living in water up to one foot in depth. This means it can be grown in areas which would normally be considered unsuitable for growing crops.

Due to the plant’s robust physical characteristics and rapid growth rate, Bulrush is an ideal sustainable raw material for manufacturing of compostable packaging products. It is grown wild in the low mountain areas and marsh lands of Jiangxi Province in southeastern China, harvesting takes place annually by local farmers, who would otherwise be unable to harvest any other type of crop on this type of wet land.  Approximately 50 small businesses are employed in the harvesting process of Biopac’s Bulrush products.

As well as the packaging being biodegradable, there is no negative impact on the environment in the production of bulrush packaging.  Conventional packaging and paper suppliers are renowned for dumping toxic waste from the bleaching process into local streams and rivers, in fact many in China have been ordered to close. The pulp factory of Biopac has stringent environmental standards which include management of waste water in a controlled closed system.  The waste liquid is treated and never leaves the mill. This pulp factory is a state of the art “green” operation.

Mark Brigden, Director of Biopac says “It’s fantastic to have become the European distributor of Bulrush packaging; it is a product range that fits perfectly with our product offering.  Not only is it a product that biodegrades within 90 days, its growth benefits the environment and it provides livlihoods for farmers with land that would otherwise be deemed as useles.”
