PV Systems help power yacht across the world

Solar panels supplied by GB-Sol have been installed on a yacht which is to travel from the UK to California to raise awareness about the world's environmental problems. The solar panels will power the yacht's electrical equipment such as navigation, laptops, satellite communications and science instruments.

The 72' steel hulled sailing vessel, formerly part of Global Challenge Race, will set sail from the UK in September and spend almost 2 years travelling the Atlantic, South America, Panama Canal and Mexico to finally set anchor in California. Pangaea Explorations' aim of the trip is to raise awareness of ocean pollution, species bio diversity decline, human impact and other key problems the ocean is facing today.

A key focus of the trip will be to assess offshore areas of the North and South Atlantic for plastic debris accumulation- as has been found in the Pacific. The team will also be communicating weekly to over 2,000 school children in New York City and Wales.

"We are delighted to have provided Pangaea Explorations with solar panels to support the crew for the duration of the voyage" said Terry Sweeney of GB-Sol. "The GBSOL Flexi70 panels produce 70watts each and simply need daylight to work."

Ron Ritter of Pangaea Explorations added, "The crew are excited to set sail and the panels are just what we needed to provide us with electricity during the voyage. More importantly we are minimising our carbon footprint, demonstrating the simple step we can all take to find alternative forms of energy."

Important partners include the Algalita Research Foundation, Reach-the-World and the members of the University of Plymouth.
