The Silver Screen returns to The Daffodil

Almost half a century after the last film screened at the Daffodil restaurant, the movies are returning to the former 1920’s Art Deco cinema, re-capturing its cinematic magic of the past with a number of performances and exhibitions throughout November.

The former picture palace in Suffolk Parade will host silent film screenings with live musical accompaniment in partnership with The Cheltenham Film Festival as well as a photographic exhibition brought to Cheltenham by BAFTA (the British Academy of Film and Television Arts).

The Art Deco restaurant first opened as The Daffodil cinema in 1922 during the silent film era. A highly popular venue, in 1930 a sound system replaced the orchestra as ‘talkies’ took hold, but a decline in cinema attendance in the 50s led to the eventual closure of the cinema in 1963.

On Saturday 5 November, film lovers can enjoy a two course lunch before sitting back and enjoying the historic screening of Piccadily, a lavish British 1920s showbiz melodrama, accompanied by renowned silent cinema pianist Stephen Horne.

In true cinematic tradition, guests will be handed a tub of savoury popcorn as well as a complimentary glass of Champagne on arrival followed by a two-course lunch before kicking back and enjoying the film.

A collection of portraiture from the BAFTA Archive and Exhibition programme will also be displayed at The Daffodil throughout November, showcasing award-winning studio and reportage portraiture commissioned by BAFTA since 2007.

Mark Stephens, proprietor of The Daffodil restaurant, said: “Bringing the movies back to The Daffodil is going to be remarkable. We’ve always been really proud of our cinematic Art Deco heritage, which is not just about the stunning architecture. Entertainment and enjoyment are at the heart of the experience we try to give our guests, whether they’re sipping a cocktail after work in the Circle Bar, which was once the cinema lounge, or enjoying dinner with family and friends in the restaurant where the stalls would once have been.”

“Seeing silent films evocative of the period when this building was in its heyday as a cinema, accompanied by live performances from really talented musicians, is going to be exceptional and the opportunity to host a BAFTA photographic exhibition is a real privilege. We can’t wait!”

Tickets for Piccadilly  cost £45 for adults and £43 for concessions. Entry to the BAFTA Photographic Exhibition is Free of charge.
